More settled weather with higher than average temperatures for this time of year is poised to return to Ireland in the next two weeks after a dull and damp weekend.

While the forecast for the coming weekend is not one to get excited about, more positive signs are to be found in Met Éireann’s extended range forecast, the most recent edition of which was published on Tuesday, July 1.

Caution must always be exercised with any forecasts beyond the short-term, but the weather patterns Met Éireann is spotting as we head into the middle of July provide definite cause for optimism.

The forecast for Week 1 (7-13 July) is “showing a slight signal for high pressure building which indicates more settled weather”.

“Temperatures are indicated to be above average for this time of year. Precipitation is likely to be below average especially in parts of the southwest and west of Ireland,” the forecast reads.

That forecast aligns with heat maps for Ireland late next week which suggests temperatures could rise to as high as 26C in the west and the midlands next Friday although, again, there’s no guarantee of those conditions materialising with a forecast so far in advance.

Week 2 of Met Eireann’s extended forecast (14-20 July) again shows a “signal for high pressure over most of Ireland, with the exception of the far southwest which is showing no specific marker for either low or high pressure”. Temperatures are again expected to be above average and rainfall amounts below average over the course of that week.

The trend for high pressure and more settled weather continues in week 3 (21-28 July) and week 4 (29 July – 3 August) of the extended range forecast but “confidence continues to decrease” in week 3 and is “low” in week 4 as a much clearer picture of what’s in store will emerge as we get closer to the end of the month.

In the immediate term, we’re in for plenty of cloud and rain in the coming days, with Met Éireann forecasting outbreaks of rain and drizzle in a breezy weekend from Friday right through to Monday, when the overall picture will begin to improve.

Check out Met Éireann’s forecast for the coming days below.

Friday

Generally cloudy today with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, although there will brighter spells in the southeast this morning. Rain and drizzle will continue to spread southeastwards across the country through the day, turning heavy at times in the west. It will be a rather windy day with moderate to fresh, occasionally strong, and gusty southwesterly winds developing. Highest temperatures of 14 to 20 degrees, warmest in the south.

Tonight will be cloudy and misty with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Hill and coastal fog too. Breezy at first with a moderate to fresh and gusty west to southwest wind, easing light to moderate overnight. Lowest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees.

Saturday

Saturday will be a mostly dull day with patchy light rain and drizzle. The best of any sunny spells will be in the south and east, where it will be warm and humid. Highest temperatures will range between 14 degrees in the northwest and 22 degrees in the southeast, in a moderate westerly breeze.

Mostly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain or drizzle and patches of mist and fog on Saturday night. Lowest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees with light to moderate westerly winds.

Sunday

Cloudy at first with scattered outbreaks of rain or drizzle. Brightening up through the afternoon and evening with sunny spells and scattered showers. Breezy with a moderate to fresh and gusty northwesterly wind. Highest temperatures ranging from 14 degrees in the northwest to 20 degrees in the southeast.

Mainly dry with clear spells on Sunday night but cloudy with isolated showers at times in the west and north. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with light to moderate northwesterly winds.

Monday

There’ll be a few showers on Monday, but most places will stay dry. It’ll be rather cloudy with just occasional sunny intervals. Highest temperatures ranging from 14 degrees in the northwest to 20 degrees in the southeast, in a moderate northwesterly breeze. Mostly dry with a mix of cloud and clear spells on Monday night. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with a light west to northwest wind.
