81C has announced the launch of Second Chance Studios, a new community-driven initiative celebrating sustainable creativity, youth empowerment, and hands-on learning.
The event series debuts with a free all-ages creative workshop event from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, at 81C’s Strand Gade Main Art Gallery in downtown Charlotte Amalie.
“We are deeply grateful to the sponsors who’ve helped launch this initiative and look forward to expanding the program monthly,” said Zack Zook, 81C Owner and 81C Arts Executive Director. “By repurposing materials that might otherwise be discarded, we create artful experiences and opportunities for creative engagement.”
Open to the public, the event invites participants to explore the art of upcycling — transforming tote bags and T-shirts into one-of-a-kind wearable works of art.
Attendees will have access to stencils, sewing machines, fabric scraps, paint, markers, beads, and more. Tote bags and T-shirts, donated by Prosperity Farm Distillery and the St. Thomas-St. John Historic Trust will be available for guest use.
Guests are encouraged to bring their own items for customization or use materials provided.
Local artist Siyandi and 81C Arts Director Dyonna Potter will provide creative guidance throughout the afternoon.
St. Thomas clothing brands from D.O.P.E. World, ReVearth, and LowKey will be on site to assist and engage youth with creative instruction and inspiration.
“The involvement of emerging community brands like D.O.P.E. World and ReVearth are equally significant — they bring essential inspiration and connection, particularly for our youth,” Zook said.
The event will also feature a pop-up shop by these St. Thomas-based clothing brands:
