A new planning application has been submitted for the job centre in Mill Walk(Image: Google Street maps)
Changes are set to be made to Nuneaton’s Job Centre building. If approved it will see all of the glass in the prominent building in Mill Walk replaced.
“The proposals involve the replacement of the existing single-glazed curtain walling and window systems to Mill House with new, similar in style and colour installations incorporating double glazing and integrated trickle ventilation,” a planning application explains.
“The upgraded glazing systems are designed to enhance the building’s thermal performance while maintaining the appearance and character of the existing facades.”

The large office building is said to have replaced a flour mill which stood on this site until about 1970. At one point the building was due to be razed to the ground. As part of the original ‘Bridge to Living’ regeneration scheme plan the large DWP building would have needed to be demolished.
This led to a wrangle between the DWP and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council which lasted a number of years.
Eventually, the plans were changed after they were re-phased by the council. While part of ‘Bridge to Living’ project is still going ahead, with a number of buildings on Bridge Street being demolished it does not include the DWP building.
The job centre remains the only one in town after a ‘pop up’ opened in the nearby Ropewalk Shopping Centre. The Job Centre opened a temporary branch in the former H&M unit in the shopping centre back in 2021.
But it is now closed and the Mary Ann Evans Hospice has taken over the unit in the shopping centre.
