The ordinance aimed at establishing Dhaka Central University has been finalised and will soon be placed before the appropriate authorities for approval, the Ministry of Education said on Sunday.
According to a press release issued by the ministry, the Secondary and Higher Education Division has completed all procedural steps and sent the final draft of the Dhaka Central University Ordinance to the Cabinet Division.
The ministry said that before finalising the ordinance, the Secondary and Higher Education Division went through several important stages, including collecting opinions from relevant ministries and departments, seeking public feedback by publishing the draft on its website, holding consultation meetings with teachers, students and members of civil society, and obtaining expert opinions.
The press release noted that the main objective in finalising the draft was to reflect the reasonable expectations of all stakeholders while addressing concerns and establishing a framework capable of ensuring quality education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The ministry credited the patience, cooperation and constructive engagement of all parties for enabling the completion of the complex process, and said progress updates were regularly shared with the public through press releases.
The ministry emphasised that establishing a sustainable and world-class university requires fundamental and structural reforms to be carried out in an orderly, phased and appropriate manner. Any unexpected situation or disorder at any stage, it warned, could jeopardise the entire initiative.
As the ordinance is now awaiting approval at the highest level of government, the ministry urged all concerned to refrain from any activities or programmes that could cause public inconvenience or disrupt normal life.
It cautioned that emotionally driven or unstable situations could undermine the long-standing efforts and achievements associated with the initiative.
Expressing optimism, the Ministry of Education said it believes that by maintaining patience and mutual cooperation, the formal launch of Dhaka Central University can be ensured in the near future, opening a new horizon for the expansion of higher education in Bangladesh.
Students of the seven colleges have been staging protests for a long time demanding the promulgation of the Dhaka Central University ordinance.
