Authorities clarify misinformation as the search for Nancy Guthrie continues
As the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie enters its second month, social media has become a source of unsubstantiated claims about the case. In recent days, viral content suggesting a grim conclusion has spread rapidly across platforms, prompting authorities to publicly correct the record.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that there is no truth to reports that Nancy’s body has been found, and has moved to address the misinformation before it compromises the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
TikTok content creators aaayyyllll2 and news.crime.tv2 claimed that the search for Savannah Guthrie’s mother had concluded after Nancy’s body was allegedly found floating in a pond near the Catalina Foothills on Saturday. Both posts shared footage of a floating body being retrieved by authorities and alleged that it had been identified as Nancy Guthrie.
The department moved quickly to correct the claims. ‘That video is not accurate,’ a spokesperson said. ‘It was not taken in our jurisdiction, and the officers shown are not Pima County deputies.’
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos also confirmed on Friday that the investigation into Nancy’s disappearance is ‘still growing.’ The FBI has also joined the Arizona police in the search for Nancy, who has now been missing for nearly a month.
DNA samples were recovered from inside Nancy’s home, but rather than providing clarity, they have deepened the complexity of the case. Nanos confirmed that the samples came from more than one individual.
‘Our lab tells us that there’s challenges with it,’ Nanos explained. ‘The technology is moving so fast and in such a frenzy that they think some of this stuff will resolve itself in a matter of weeks, months or maybe a year.’
The search for Nancy has taken longer than expected. Nanos, however, assured her family that they are not giving up and that he is confident that they will eventually locate Nancy.
‘We’re not quitting,’ Nanos said. ‘We’ll find her. Yeah.’
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on 1 February 2026, sparking one of the most intensive searches in the region’s history. In the weeks following her disappearance, the vacuum of information led many to speculate about foul play within her own inner circle.
Speculation reached a fever pitch as some online commentators seemingly suggested that it was an inside job and her family members were involved in her disappearance. However, after exhaustive interviews and forensic digital analysis, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department officially cleared the Guthrie family of any wrongdoing.
‘To be clear…the Guthrie family — to include all siblings and spouses — has been cleared as possible suspects in this case,’ the Pima County Sheriff Department announced.
The authorities also acknowledged the Guthrie family’s cooperation and called out those who seemingly questioned them, saying the suggestion they were involved in their matriarch’s vanishing was ‘not only wrong, it is cruel.’
As the search continues, the community remains on edge, caught between the hope of a safe return and the reality of the passing time.
