VIETNAM – Vietnam’s tourism industry is at an important moment in its development, with growth driving the transformation of its places and ways to create a more powerful destination on the world market. Leveraging on the latest technology to build a smart tourism ecosystem and with an emphasis on sustainability, Vietnam aspires to offer tourists a completely immersive experience while safeguarding its rich cultural and natural heritage sites. This forward-thinking strategy on the part of the government to improve infrastructure, update tourism laws and facilitate cooperation between different countries lays a foundation for stable growth going forward. Offering strategies that will open the door to a more diverse range of international visitors, and sustainable trends in travel — all are part of a commitment by Vietnam Tourism to provide local tourism enterprises with more relevance as modern travellers make their needs known.

This period, nonetheless, marks a crucial turning point in the evolution of Vietnam’s tourism industry. At a new meeting, the Chief Deputy Prime Minister said that specific strategies to restart the tourism sector should be implemented and made competitive, sustainable and capable of mobilizing against the digital age. The package of measures contained in the official Government conclusion is aimed at the development of a new, intelligent, fully integrated and competitive global tourism market. Efforts here are made to make Vietnam an important player in the global tourism sector but with a standing that preserves its cultural and natural heritage.

One of the core strategies for Vietnam’s tourism future is the digital transformation of the sector. The government has called for the implementation of advanced digital tools that can help manage tourism more efficiently from both central and local levels. With rapid technological advancements, this shift will facilitate the creation of a “smart tourism ecosystem.” Digital platforms will provide transparent, real-time information to tourists, helping them make informed decisions and improving the overall tourism experience.

Digital transformation, while ensuring sustainability, can make tourism management more effective. For example, online booking systems, smart hotel management, and digital guides can reduce the dependency on physical infrastructures, reduce operational costs, and improve accessibility for tourists. Additionally, a digital tourism ecosystem will encourage the development of tools that enable data-driven decision-making, market analysis, and better customer service, contributing to a more efficient and transparent tourism sector.

Repositioning Vietnam’s tourism brand in the global market is essential for long-term success. The government has placed significant emphasis on enhancing awareness of the country’s potential, highlighting its political stability, rich cultural history, diverse natural resources, and the safety it offers to visitors. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has been tasked with leading the rebranding effort, which includes a professional, systematic approach to marketing Vietnam as a leading global tourism destination.

Vietnam’s unique offering includes its iconic landscapes, ranging from lush rice terraces to pristine beaches, bustling cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and rich cultural landmarks such as ancient temples and UNESCO heritage sites. The country is also home to a vibrant cuisine, offering tourists an immersive experience into the region’s traditions. Leveraging these unique aspects while ensuring that these offerings align with global tourism trends will enhance Vietnam’s competitive edge on the international stage.

To ensure that Vietnam’s tourism industry can effectively target the right demographics, the government has stressed the importance of conducting thorough market research and forecasting. This approach is crucial in identifying high-spending, long-term visitors, especially from regions like East Asia, Europe, and North America. With accurate market forecasting, Vietnam can develop tailored strategies to attract affluent tourists while diversifying the tourism market beyond traditional visitor groups.

In addition to market research, training programs for tourism professionals will be a priority. Building a well-trained workforce capable of offering high-quality services is crucial to maintaining competitive standards in hospitality, tour guiding, and customer service. These initiatives will also ensure that the country remains adaptable to shifting market demands, such as eco-tourism and sustainable travel.

The tourism industry in Vietnam also faces challenges related to infrastructure and legal frameworks. To address these issues, the government has committed to reviewing and amending the 2017 Tourism Law and related policies to better suit the evolving needs of the sector. This includes improving laws related to tourism services, visa policies, and international cooperation, as well as creating a more supportive environment for private enterprises and tourism businesses.

The role of businesses as the driving force behind tourism growth is central to the government’s plan. Policies will be designed to ensure that businesses thrive, offering them incentives to invest in the sector and creating synergies between public and private stakeholders. This collaborative approach will help streamline operations, boost investment, and foster sustainable growth in the tourism sector.

The government has also identified agricultural and rural tourism as a key area for growth. With a focus on sustainable tourism, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, will implement programs aimed at developing rural tourism that integrates local agriculture. The goal is to attract tourists to Vietnam’s rural areas, where they can experience traditional farming practices, participate in local food production, and enjoy rural landscapes.

This model not only offers an authentic and enriching travel experience but also provides significant economic benefits to rural communities. By creating strong partnerships between tourism operators and local farmers, the sector can help stimulate rural economies while promoting environmental sustainability. Moreover, this approach will increase awareness of the importance of preserving natural resources and biodiversity in rural areas.

Vietnam’s tourism development is also closely linked to international cooperation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked with working alongside the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to promote Vietnamese culture and tourism in foreign markets. This includes active participation in global tourism exhibitions, hosting international tourism events, and fostering partnerships with foreign travel agencies to increase inbound tourism.

A key strategy in this regard is the expansion of visa exemption policies for select tourist markets. By making it easier for tourists from key regions to visit, Vietnam can expect to see an increase in international arrivals, especially from countries with high outbound tourism volumes. These policy changes will ensure that Vietnam remains competitive with other regional tourism leaders.

The Vietnamese government’s tourism policy places a significant emphasis on innovation, particularly in the private sector. Private enterprises are expected to play a pivotal role in driving the country’s tourism growth, especially through the adoption of new technologies and the development of unique tourism products. This includes everything from developing luxury resorts to enhancing eco-tourism and adventure tourism offerings.

The tourism industry is witnessing growing demand for specialized services such as wellness tourism, adventure tourism, and eco-friendly travel. Vietnam’s natural resources provide a perfect backdrop for these types of tourism experiences. By encouraging private businesses to innovate in these areas, the government aims to position the country as a prime destination for niche travel markets, which continue to grow globally.

Vietnam’s tourism sector is poised for significant transformation. With the government’s focus on digitalization, infrastructure development, sustainable practices, and international cooperation, the future of Vietnamese tourism looks bright. The country’s rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and political stability, combined with modern innovations in tourism management, will allow Vietnam to become a leading global tourism destination.

Vietnam Tourism: The Digital Transformation and Sustainable Growth Strategy The country seeks to achieve this by offering improved visitor experiences courtesy smart tourism solutions and further promote responsible practices with a minimal impact on Mother Nature. This is to put the way paving for luring more international markets and make it attractive as an ideal place in the global tourism map.

Thanks to a collaborative approach of Government-business-community, more international visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy Vietnam’s diversified culture and natural landscape, tourism potential and destination images are broadly promoted, effectively contribute to positioning tourism as a prospective industry of sustainable development. Such a vision of the future holds a brighter, more equitable and more competitive tourism industry in store for Vietnam — for locals as much as internationals.
