FARGO — Some local elementary school students have new American flags thanks to AMVETS Post No. 7.
First graders at Madison Elementary School in Fargo learned all about the meaning behind the flag.
Members of Cass County 40 and 8 gave a presentation, which included a pledge of allegiance and each student receiving a flag, on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
They went over the history, code and etiquette around the flag, such as making sure it never touches the ground.
Coordinator Dave Rice says the annual event has gone on for more than 20 years, with the support of AMVETS Post No. 7 and the American Legion.
“I focus on, you know, you’re going to grow up someday, you’re going to be in charge, and you’re going to be a teacher or a parent or whatever. So try to learn all you can when you’re in school. So when you grow up, you become a good citizen,” Rice said.
The group has visited about half of the 38 schools across the metro. In total, they’ll share the significance of the American flag with more than 2,200 first graders.
