FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU/KTVF) – The Fairbanks Job Center is holding a job fair this week focused on employers in the retail and banking industries, among others.
The event is scheduled Thursday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Fairbanks Regional Office Building on Seventh Avenue.
With 35 employers expected — including Fred Meyer, Alaska Industrial Hardware, and Global Credit Union — members of the community are invited to attend to learn more about the opportunities available in the Interior, regardless of residency or age, as the minimum age for hiring can depend on the individual employer.
“A lot of grocery and retail type stores hire kids as well, so you’re talking, you know, 16-17 years old,” said Matthew Kane, Business Connections Representative with the job center.
One of seven job fairs put on by FJC that take place each year, Thursday’s event will be followed by a general job fair in October.
According to Kane, the job fairs regularly see between 100 and 150 attendees.
Kane advises those looking for a job to “dress appropriately.”
“Probably don’t come in your slippers, but at the same time, I would make sure you have a resume with you,” Kane said. “Be ready to fill out applications.”
The retail sector, he added, often conducts interviews at the fair and can make hiring decisions on the spot.
“Employers are well aware that we have interview rooms that they can interview people. They can do it right there at their table if they want to as well, but typically, this is one of those that will see probably a lot of people getting hired,” Kane said.
Job fairs, according to Kane, help employers to get to know each other and learn from each other’s recruitment strategies.
“Fairbanks is such a small community, and I think that it just helps us all to get to know each other again and, you know, shows the importance of working here in the Fairbanks area,” he added.
The mission of the Fairbanks Job Center, part of the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, is to connect job seekers with employers.
The center provides help preparing resumes, puts on classes for the community, and provides career services.
