LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – An unwatched fire caused a nearly century-old railroad bridge to erupt in flames and collapse early Monday morning, according to Lincoln Fire and Rescue.
LFR spokeswoman MJ Lierman said Tuesday that an inspector has determined that the blaze was started by an unattended campfire.
The Lincoln Police Department told 10/11 News that the investigation is ongoing as it identifies and interviews witnesses. Authorities are also working to determine if the fire was arson.
No arrests or citations have been made as of Tuesday afternoon.
LFR responded at 3:45 a.m. Monday to the railroad bridge over Salt Creek by Westgate and Sun Valley boulevards near Pinnacle Bank Arena. The bridge is owned by Union Pacific and consists of heavy timber.
Lierman said fire trucks had a difficult time getting to the bridge due to the location and limited weight capabilities. A brush rig was also requested to help extinguish a grass fire that ignited and quickly spread around the bridge.
The burning bridge eventually collapsed just before 5:30 a.m. It continued to burn itself out throughout the day.
Lierman said the bridge is a total loss.
The rail line, which was used periodically, has been shut down until further notice.
