Harlow Council has announced the first playgrounds to be upgraded for local families as part of its mission to ‘renew our neighbourhoods’. Playgrounds in Glebelands and Potters Field will be transformed from this April, with preparation works beginning at the end of March.
Contracts for installation are already in place. New 3D designs have been released showing both playgrounds being extended. Potters Field will feature more than 70 new play elements, and Glebelands will include over 40, with upgrades focused on making equipment safer, more inclusive, and more enjoyable for children of all ages.
The improvements will also refresh the look and feel of each site to ensure they can be enjoyed for many years. Last year, Harlow council committed to ensuring every child in Harlow has access to safe, modern and fun places to play. Residents were invited to have their say as part of the developing the new programme.
Feedback has been carefully considered as part of the planning and design process for these first new playgrounds. Commenting on the announcement, Councillor Nicky Purse, cabinet member for environment, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to announce the first playgrounds that will be transformed and ready for families to enjoy this summer.
“Playgrounds sit at the very heart of our neighbourhoods. They are the spaces where children learn, grow and build confidence where friendships are formed and memories are made and where families come together as part of a thriving community.
“This programme is about far more than replacing equipment. It is about renewing our neighbourhoods and creating vibrant, welcoming spaces that serve every generation. By asking residents for their views, we have ensured this investment reflects what families told us matters most.
“The new designs will be safer, more inclusive, and more inspiring, giving children and young people high-quality places to play close to home. High-quality green and play spaces are a key part of placemaking and regeneration. They contribute to healthier lifestyles, stronger communities, and civic pride.
“This investment is another practical step in delivering on our ambition of Building Harlow’s Future. These two new playgrounds mark the beginning of a wider programme of improvements. Further upgrades are planned for 2026 and 2027 as we continue to invest in playgrounds across the town and ensure every neighbourhood benefits.”
