President Donald Trump officially launched a new government website, TrumpRx, aimed at helping Americans buy medicines at lower prices.
President Donald Trump’s new discount drug website, TrumpRx.gov, launched Feb. 5, less than one year after it was first announced in a May 12 executive order.
The government-run website allows Americans to search for discounted prices on select prescription medications, either by linking directly to participating drug manufacturers or by providing pharmacy coupon codes similar to GoodRx.
TrumpRx is designed for cash-paying customers only. People using the site cannot use health insurance to cover the cost of medications, according to the website.
At launch, about 40 prescription drugs are listed. The site says additional medications are expected to be added.
A variety of potentially life-saving drugs are included, such as Insulin Lispro, Farxiga, and Tikosyn, along with brand-name GLP-1 diabetes and weight-loss drugs, fertility treatments, inhalers, and medications for HIV, autoimmune diseases, and heart conditions.
The discounted prices result from voluntary agreements between the Trump administration and pharmaceutical manufacturers, not from direct government price-setting. TrumpRx itself does not sell or ship medications.
On Sept. 30, Pfizer announced it would make some products available through TrumpRx, according to a White House press release. In November and December, additional drugmakers joined the program, including Amgen, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol Myers Squibb, Genentech, Gilead, GSK, Merck, Novartis, Sanofi, EMD Serono, Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, and Novo Nordisk.
Here’s what Californians should know about the website and its available products.
When will TrumpRx be available in California?
Californians can access TrumpRx.gov now. The site launched Feb. 5, including in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, the Central Valley, and rural counties where pharmacy access can be limited.
There are no California-specific restrictions, though availability ultimately depends on whether a drugmaker ships directly to California or whether a participating pharmacy honors the coupon.
Is TrumpRx free?
Yes. TrumpRx is free to use, and there is no cost to browse drug prices or access manufacturer links or coupons. However, users must still pay out of pocket for any medications they purchase.
How does TrumpRx work?
While TrumpRx was originally designed to circumvent pharmacies altogether in the May 12 executive order, it’s not universal on the site.
For some prescriptions, consumers can find their medications directly through TrumpRx.gov, a site that connects drug manufacturers with those purchasing prescriptions. They bypass the pharmacy.
For other drugs, a coupon code appears for customers, much like when you use GoodRx.
The Trump administration has reached agreements with major pharmaceutical companies that trade lower drug costs for customers for a three-year exemption from tariffs, according to multiple pharmaceutical company press releases.
Can you use TrumpRx if you currently have medical insurance?
Yes — but insurance cannot be used for purchases made through TrumpRx.
Even if you have health insurance, TrumpRx prices are cash-pay only, and payments generally do not count toward insurance deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums. Patients must choose between using their insurance at a pharmacy or paying the TrumpRx price separately.
This means TrumpRx may be most useful for:
* People who are uninsured
* Patients whose insurance does not cover a specific drug
* People facing high deductibles or copays

How TrumpRx compares with California programs
California already operates or participates in:
* CalRx, the state’s own generic drug initiative
* Medi-Cal negotiated pricing
* Covered California formularies
* Private discount programs widely used at major pharmacy chains
Experts say TrumpRx may help some Californians in narrow situations, but it does not replace insurance coverage or state-level cost-control efforts.
