Popular photographer and videographer Petter Asperholm Hedlund, who was a familiar face in the local music scene, has died at the age of 40.
Maltese band ManaTapu announced the death of the Swedish photographer on social media, describing him as their “brother”. Hedlund was often on stage with the band, snapping pictures of them and the crowd.
The cause of death was not revealed.
“His contagious laugh, calm spirit, and incredible talent brought so much light into our lives and band,” the band wrote. “There’s a massive party in heaven right now, and we all know who opened the dance floor.”
Speaking to Times of Malta, ManaTapu band member Ryan Abela said Petter was often the main attraction of the band’s shows due to his energetic dancing.
“He was part of our band from the very beginning. He inspired us, created our videos and visuals, travelled with us on tour, and was always a true friend and brother with whom we shared not just music, but life and many other projects,” he said.
“He was too young and we’re all devastated by his loss, but we’re sure he’s flying high wherever he is now. We send our deepest condolences to his family… and all his friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
Hedlund was also part of the environmental and social movement, Ġustizzja għal Artna, a campaign protesting against the proposed planning reform bills.
Moviment Graffitti activist Andre Callus, said Petter contributed to the campaign by filming and editing interviews with residents who were impacted by the proposed planning law.
“Although Malta was not his homeland, it was still his home and the land he loved,” Callus said. “I got to know him only for a short while, and I immediately felt that he was a good person, with a heart of gold.”
Musician Nick Cassette Mor said his “positive outlook on life” to be “contagious”.
“You supported me in everything I did, and that meant so much. What amazed me most was that you weren’t just a photographer; sometimes you were the main attraction of the show, a truly unique gift.”
