Hollywood legend Robert Duvall, whose career in film and television spanned more than seven decades, sadly passed away at 95. The Academy Award winner for 1983’s “Tender Mercies” built a legacy with unforgettable performances in “The Godfather,” “Apocalypse Now,” “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and dozens of other films that shaped modern cinema.
His wife, Luciana, confirmed his passing on Monday, February 16, in a statement shared on Facebook. TMZ was first to report the news of Robert Duvall’s death.
“Yesterday, we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.”
She continued, “To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.”
Duvall is survived by his wife, Argentine actress and director Luciana Pedraza.
Luciana announced that he passed away peacefully at home.
He married Barbara Benjamin in 1964. Their marriage ended in 1975. He later married actress Gail Youngs in 1982. They divorced in 1986. His third marriage was to Sharon Brophy from 1991 to 1995.
His longest and final marriage was to Luciana. Friends often described their relationship as steady and supportive.
Luciana collaborated with him on several projects and remained by his side throughout his later years.
Duvall did not have biological or adopted children.
In past interviews, he acknowledged that his life centered largely on his craft and long friendships. He maintained close ties with fellow actors and longtime colleagues, many of whom considered him family.
However, the veteran actor never expressed regret about not having children.
“He’s really achieved so much, and he’s proud of so many things he’s done, from his charitable work to winning the Oscar for [the 1983 film] Tender Mercies,” an insider told Closer in May 2021. “He’s grateful for a lot and tells his friends that he’s had an incredible life.”
Duvall was born to Mildred Virginia Hart, an amateur actress, and William Howard Duvall, a career Navy officer who later rose to admiral. His childhood reflected both worlds.
He grew up around structure and service, but also around a quiet appreciation for performance and storytelling.
He was a descendant of Civil War General Robert E. Lee, a family connection he acknowledged at times but did not center in his public life.
Even as his career soared with films such as “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now,” Duvall chose a life away from constant attention.
He chose long conversations over loud rooms, a home-cooked meal over a red carpet, and quiet evenings over the glare of Hollywood lights. Those who knew him best often spoke of his calm presence. They described him as thoughtful, grounded, and unwavering in his devotion to his work and the people he cared about.
On screen, he helped define modern American acting.
