The Texas Democratic Caucus held a secret meeting on Sunday night to discuss strategies ahead of the special legislative session, set to start at Noon on Monday.
CBS Austin waited outside the meeting to speak with lawmakers and learn about their plans going into the special session. While most didn’t want to talk when leaving, State Representative Donna Howard of Austin spoke briefly, and although vague, didn’t rule out breaking quorum, which would prevent the special session from starting as scheduled.
“We’re going to do what we think is going to be best for our constitutions. That’s what this is about,” State Rep. Howard said.
The meeting took place at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union building in southeast Austin. Howard noted that it is normal for the party to meet before sessions, though she did not provide specifics about the meeting’s nature.
Attempts to gather comments from other attendees as they left the meeting were unsuccessful. Attorney Chad Dunn, who works in civil rights and state and federal voting rights matters, was also seen leaving the meeting and had no comment.
