Shops have reportedly been shut as the road remains locked down. Images now seem to show a blue tent erected in the middle of the street.
Police tape can be seen draped across the road, deterring traffic and pedestrians.
Lothian Buses announced around 6.50am they were diverting buses away from the thoroughfare “until further notice” due to road closure.
They posted a message on social media reading: “Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve Great Junction Street and are instead diverted via Commercial Street, The Shore and Henderson Street until further notice.”
Edinburgh Travel News also took to X, formerly Twitter, alerting residents of the closure. They announced: “Great Junction Street closed around Bangor Road due to Police incident.
“Expect delays in alternative / surrounding routes.”
Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
