A wing surfer had a lucky escape from a white shark after falling onto the apex predator, which took a mighty chunk out of his board.
Margaret River surfer Andy McDonald was wing foiling at Bombie break, near Surfer’s Point at Prevelly in WA’s South West, about 5.45pm on Monday when he fell onto the shark.
“I fell onto it,” he told friends after the encounter.
“It was actually wrapped around me.
“You’ve got two leashes — you have a leash around your waist and on your wrist — and it was like in me, and I was punching it.”
Mr McDonald recalled jumping onto his sail to get out of the water, then started yelling for help when a fellow surfer pushed him to shore.
The terrifying incident was captured by surfcam Swellnet, which shows Mr McDonald fall from his board and huge amounts of splashing in the water.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development issued a shark warning for Prevelly after the white shark bit the foil board causing Mr McDonald to fall.
“The rider was not injured,” a DPIRD spokesman said.
“The rider was located between Boat Ramp Surfing Spot and Bombie Surfing Spot at the time of the interaction.”
Authorities warned people to take extra care around Prevelly and to adhere to beach closures.
“Officers from the DPIRD, along with staff from other agencies are monitoring the situation,” a spokesman said.
