The Trump administration’s decision to freeze federal childcare funds is reckless, punitive, and deeply harmful to working families across this country. Childcare is not a luxury. It is essential infrastructure that allows parents to work, children to thrive, and communities to function.
Holding up critical Child Care and Development Fund dollars under the guise of fraud prevention is not about accountability. It is about using isolated cases as a pretext to undermine public services and punish states, particularly Democratic-led states like Colorado, that are committed to supporting working families
If the administration were serious about addressing fraud, it would work collaboratively with states to strengthen oversight without disrupting care for millions of children. Instead, this blanket freeze threatens to shutter childcare centers, displace workers, and leave families scrambling for safe, affordable options. The people harmed by this decision are not bad actors. They are parents, children, and caregivers who rely on these services every day.
In Colorado and across the nation, childcare providers already operate on razor-thin margins. Interrupting federal funding jeopardizes their ability to keep doors open, pay staff, and meet basic operating costs. Families, especially women, low-income households, and communities of color, will bear the brunt of this instability.
Childcare should never be weaponized for political grandstanding. We can protect taxpayer dollars and protect children at the same time. This administration’s approach does neither.
I call on the Trump administration to immediately release these funds and engage in good-faith, targeted oversight that does not sacrifice children’s wellbeing or working families’ livelihoods for political theater.
Working families deserve solutions.
