Colombo, January. 10 (Daily Mirror) – The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) announced that the country received a record-high amount of emigrant remittances in 2025, the highest in the 40-year history of foreign employment.
According to the Bureau, between January and December last year, Sri Lanka received US $8.07 billion (Rs. 2432 billion) from migrant workers, marking a 22.8% increase compared to the US $6.575 billion received in 2024.
The highest monthly remittance was recorded in December 2025, with a total of US $879.1 million sent home by Sri Lankan workers abroad.
The SLBFE attributed this growth to government policies aimed at sending quality skilled workers abroad. Last year, over 310,000 Sri Lankans traveled overseas for employment under these initiatives.
The Bureau emphasized that this upward trend in remittances is a significant boost to the country’s foreign exchange reserves and overall economy.
