South London man who ‘made a pact with the devil’ jailed over terror material

Declan George-Candiani from Streatham was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Friday (November 28) to 23 months in prison.

The 26-year-old will also serve an additional year on licence and remain subject to notification requirements for 10 years.

George-Candiani was stopped by Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) officers at Stansted on August 13 last year.

Officers examined his phone and later searched his home, seizing an iPad.

Detectives found documents linked to terrorism, including guides on carrying out so-called “lone wolf” attacks.

Prosecutors said he had an interest in extreme right-wing ideology and deliberately downloaded the material.

In interviews, George-Candiani claimed he had developed an “unhealthy obsession” with an extreme-right group promoting “traditional Satanism” and described feeling “overpowered” by the ideology.

He told officers he had made a “pact with the devil” to become a “minion”.

Commander Dominic Murphy, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said: “This is another example of why ‘schedule 7’ powers at our ports and borders are so important in helping us to identify potential terrorist activity.

“In this case, analysis of digital devices revealed downloads of horrific material promoted by extreme right-wing terrorist groups, as well as extremely dangerous material about carrying out attacks and other acts of extreme violence.”

Following a trial, George-Candiani was convicted on October 3 of two counts of collecting material likely to be useful to a terrorist under section 58(1) of the Terrorism Act 2000.
