The victim was interviewed by Trooper Barr, of PSP Punxsutawney, and members of Jefferson County Children and Youth Services, where it was disclosed again that she was raped the night prior.
The complaint notes the victim reported not knowing the perpetrator. Following the interview, the victim was transported to Punxsutawney Area Hospital, where a sexual assault examination was completed, and the sexual assault examination kit was then given to a member of PSP Punxsutawney Station, where it was admitted into evidence.
On March 28, 2023, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a forensic interview of the victim was completed at Western PA Cares for Kids in Brookville. During this interview, the victim reported details of the sexual assault, the complaint continues.
On March 30, 2023, the sexual assault examination kit collected from the victim on March 24, 2023, was delivered to the PSP Greensburg Regional Laboratory for examination. On June 23, 2023, the sexual assault examination was completed. On July 28, 2023, the suspect (Michael Anthony Sest) was requested to give a DNA sample for comparison, and he consensually provided a DNA sample via a buccal swab. Sest was interviewed at this time and reported that his DNA would not be a match. The sample was forwarded to the PSP Greensburg Regional Laboratory for comparison, the complaint states.
On December 5, 2023, at approximately 8:00 a.m., Trooper Barr received the Forensic DNA lab results for the DNA comparison by the PSP Greensburg Lab. The results confirmed that Sest’s DNA was a match, according to the complaint.
On December 5, 2023, the victim was interviewed by Detective Jeffrey Lee at Western PA Cares for Kids regarding this incident and the DNA evidence results.
Throughout the interview, the victim confirmed that Sest sexually assaulted her. She stated she did not report this in the original interviews out of fear. She added that she reported the assault because she did not want it to happen again, the complaint notes.
Sest was arraigned at 4:15 p.m. on December 8 in front of Magisterial District Judge David B. Inzana and lodged in the Jefferson County Jail on $75,000.00 monetary bail.
According to a criminal complaint filed on April 30, 2024, this incident occurred between 2019 and 2023 in Big Run Borough, Jefferson County.
The case came to light on March 24, 2023, when a school social worker notified the State Police in Punxsutawney following the victim’s report of being raped the previous night by an unidentified male. A sexual assault examination was promptly conducted at Punxsutawney Area Hospital, and evidence was collected and admitted, according to the complaint.
It is noted in the complaint that the juvenile victim reported she suffered sexual abuse from 10 years old to 14 years old.
Further interviews with the victim by Jefferson County Children and Youth Services and a forensic interview at Western PA Cares for Kids substantiated the initial report, the complaint continues.
