FBI Director Kash Patel is under fire from MAGA loyalists after a Fox News Digital interview intended to clear the air on the Thomas Crooks assassination attempt against President Donald Trump sparked new controversy.
Patel and his deputy, Dan Bongino, walked Fox reporter Brooke Singman through what they described as an “unprecedented global investigation” into the July 2024 attack in Pennsylvania.
They detailed thousands of interviews, dozens of device seizures, and extensive digital analysis. Patel claimed the investigation concluded Crooks, 20, acted alone.
Patel took to X to assure Trump supporters of the bureau’s transparency.
“Dan and I sat down with @BrookeSingman to walk through every aspect of the Butler investigation,” he wrote. “We fully briefed @POTUS on the entire case, and he was satisfied with the work and the results. These are the details the prior administration never released, and in some cases never even pursued. This @FBI has redoubled its efforts to provide the American people with full, factual transparency about this tragic attack.”
Despite Patel’s reassurances, MAGA figures immediately pushed back.
Tucker Carlson led the criticism, questioning the claim that Crooks had “limited online and in person interactions.”
Carlson shared screenshots allegedly showing violent imagery, extremist rhetoric, and ongoing hostility toward Trump.
He tweeted, “The FBI told us Thomas Crooks tried to kill Donald Trump last summer but somehow had no online footprint. The FBI lied, and we can prove it because we have his posts. The question is why?”
Other MAGA voices joined in. Podcaster Kyle Seraphin mocked Patel’s Fox News appearance, calling it a “cover-up theater.”
Skeptics questioned why the interview was limited to a friendly outlet and why key details, including Crooks’ rapid cremation, were left unexplained, as Inquisitr reported.
Some went further, demanding that Patel step down.
The FBI responded, defending Patel and insisting the bureau never claimed Crooks had no online footprint. Patel highlighted the investigation’s scope, noting hundreds of personnel reviewed nearly half a million digital files. He also stressed that Trump had been briefed and was satisfied with the findings.
Yet the skepticism remains intense among Trump’s base. Many believe Patel has failed to address lingering questions about the Crooks attack fully.
The backlash comes amid broader criticism of Patel, including his handling of the Epstein files and alleged personal use of the FBI jet.
Patel’s challenges underscore a difficult position: trying to maintain transparency while satisfying a base that demands complete accountability from the bureau, even on matters the FBI considers closed.
MAGA loyalists argue that any unanswered question fuels doubt, and Patel’s insistence that Crooks acted alone has done little to quell suspicion.
The Thomas Crooks investigation was supposed to be Patel’s chance to restore credibility with Trump supporters.
Instead, the director finds himself facing fresh allegations of secrecy and cover-up from the very movement that once championed him. For Patel, the fight to reassure the MAGA base may be just beginning.
