Kevin Sherrington’s A La Carte
— Dak Prescott is at his best with a full cupboard on offense and when he’s allowed to get out of a jam on his own, as he acknowledged after the Cowboys’ 40-37 OT win over the Giants. Last season, protecting their $60 million-a-year investment, they put a leash on him. Dak thinks that’s what led to his season-ending injury. He wasn’t used to running, then, when he went for it, he blew a hamstring. Lesson learned.

— Brian Schottenheimer is crazy about George Pickens, who exhausted Mike Tomlin’s patience. As long as the love lasts, Pickens makes the Cowboys’ offense interesting.
— Props to the Cowboys for getting a downhill runner in recycled Javonte Williams. Good thing it’s working out, because Jaydon Blue can’t even get on the field. Two games, two healthy scratches. Not good.

— If you only measured Micah Parsons’ worth in his sack totals, you missed the big picture. One of the reasons Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland looked all-world was because Parsons sped up a quarterback’s clock. Without him, the Cowboys’ defense turned back the clock on Russell Wilson.
— Couldn’t really expect the Rangers to sweep the Mets, too, but just winning the series in Houston may no longer be enough. If it isn’t, at least they’ve made September relevant.
— Cody Freeman is hard to strike out because he’s always in protect mode. If he choked up any more, he could hit with either end.

— “Arch Madness” is done. Not Arch’s fault for all the hoo-hah, but, until the genes kick in, if ever, his coach needs to give him a game plan closer to what Collin Klein draws up for Marcel Reed at Texas A&M.

— Did CJ Carr tip A&M’s defense with his footwork in South Bend? Whatever it was, Mike Elko has the Aggies on their toes.
— Be sure to check out our rankings on the Cowboys’ top 100 players ever and Mavs’ best 45. The collaboration on both sets of selections was collegial, though Brad Townsend got a little testy about my seeding for Brad Davis. I mean, isn’t a banner in the rafters enough?
— Story time: Over the course of nearly a half-century covering sports, yours truly has spent a fair amount of time on the road. Literally. Put 180,000 miles on a Toyota while covering the old SWC and another 340K on a ’95 Suburban that nosed into every corner of the state looking for stories.

You don’t spend that much time behind the wheel without encountering occasional hazards. Bored truckers. Blown tires. Storms. Hail. Floods.
Once outside Jacksboro at 3:00 in the morning on the way home from a football game in Lubbock, I witnessed a large, spotted, hump-backed beast bounding dreamily in my headlights. Or at least I thought I did. But nothing in my travels prepared me for a recent visit to Missouri for the wedding of our niece.
The lovely wife is, as the description suggests, a beautiful woman, inside and out. Doting mother and grandmother. Community volunteer. Wiz-bang realtor. Fun and funny. Beloved by one and all. Just the same, as navigators go, she’s Genghis Khan-ish. The condition is aggravated by a lack of confidence in her pilot. Symptoms include frustration, panic and a sudden increase in volume.
No sooner had I missed a turn in the maze of streets coursing through Big Cedar Lodge when she suddenly said, “YOUSHOULDHAVETURNEDLEFT!WHEREAREYOU YOUGOING?TURNAROUNDHERE!WATCHTHEMANWITHTHEBABY!OHMYGOSH!DON’TDRIVESOFAST!IT’SRIGHTOVERTHERE!”

My brother-in-law captured the spirit of the proceedings when he said, under his breath, “This is like a video game.”
Fortunately, we found the reception without further incident and a good time was had by all. And before you get the wrong idea, you should know the lovely wife is a wonderful traveling companion. Even when awake.
