A derelict Bulkington pub ‘in decline’ could be converted into ‘urgently’ needed flats. The White Lion pub was closed back in 2020 and has stood empty since.
Approval was given for a previous planning application to convert the building into one, eight bedroom and one, seven bedroom House of Multiple Occupation (HMO) for young professionals. But now a new application seeks to change this.
Instead the new proposal is to convert the building into a 13 bedroom assisted living home. This, the applicant says, will help support the demand for such accommodation in the area.

“Providing long term residential accommodation for those in the community that require additional care for daily living is seen as a more urgent requirement in this location, and therefore this application seeks to propose a similar scheme but internally altered to suit the assisted living needs,” the proposal explains.
“The property will consist of a reduced 13no. bedrooms, with separate living, dining and kitchen facilities. In addition to this, a separate staff office is proposed to the front of the building for security and 24/7 management on site.
“All tenants have access to the rear outdoor space.” The application adds that plans will help make the most of the building, which is ‘in need of attention.”
“By providing a residential scheme, this will prevent potential nuisance and vandalism from the area which will improve the locality for the neighbouring residents,” the proposal explains. “The high quality product of this proposal will result in revamping the area visually, improving the street scene and propelling future generation of development and overall improvement in localised areas.
“The scheme mimics what has already been approved and seen developed recently around Leicester Road, which suggests a suitable redevelopment opportunity on this site due to the larger property’s potential.”
The plan is currently being considered by officers at the Town Hall. All of the details can be found on the council’s website by searching in the planning applications section for reference 041280.
