The Progressive Tory Party of Alberta has officially been launched, party leader Peter Guthrie announced earlier this month.
“Albertans are looking for a government that reflects their values and focuses on what matters to them,” said Guthrie, who also serves as MLA for the Airdrie-Cochrane riding.
“They want careful financial management, strong and reliable public services, and leadership that brings people together to move Alberta forward.
Guthrie and Lesser Slave Lake MLA Scott Sinclair, both former UCP representatives, announced plans to form a new political party called “Progressive Conservatives” this past July. Later that month, it was announced the two would join the Alberta Party, which would then be rebranded as the Progressive Conservative Party.
The Alberta Party was initially founded as the Alberta Political Alliance Party in the 1980s. That name was changed to the Alberta Party in 1998.
In the 2023 provincial election, the Alberta Party ran just 19 candidates and received 0.71 per cent of the provincewide vote. Then leader Barry Morishita resigned in April 2024. Lindsay Amantea took over as interim leader, until Guthrie became permanent leader on Dec. 9.
The party officially changed its name to the Progressive Tory Party of Alberta on Dec. 18. Legislative changes were passed by the United Conservative Party government, preventing the word “Conservative,” as well as other similar names to currently registered political parties, from being included in any other political party.
The Progressive Tory Party of Alberta states that it believes Alberta “can once again lead with balanced budgets, effective government, and policies that are both economically sound and socially reliable.”
“Trust and accountability matter,” Guthrie said.
“Albertans expect these principles to be upheld by their government. We will restore confidence and build a government that works for all Albertans.”
