Bucharest, August 6, 2025 – Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan issued a public statement today following the death of former President Ion Iliescu, marking the end of a pivotal chapter in Romania’s modern political history.
“Ion Iliescu, former President of Romania and a political leader in the post-1989 era, passed away today,” the Prime Minister said in an official message released by the government. “He held the office of Head of State on multiple occasions and led the country’s main left-wing party during those years.”
Iliescu, who played a central role in the early years of Romania’s post-communist transition, served as President from 1990 to 1996 and again from 2000 to 2004. His political legacy remains complex, shaped by both democratic reforms and contested episodes in the country’s turbulent early 1990s.
“During his term of office, documents and decisions were adopted that influenced Romania’s trajectory, among them, the Snagov Declaration and the revision of the Constitution in 2003 — laying the foundation for major political and institutional changes,” Bolojan noted, referencing key milestones that helped align Romania with Euro-Atlantic structures.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Iliescu’s death “marks the close of a significant chapter in the country’s recent history, one defined by post-communist transition and profound transformations in public life.”
“Ion Iliescu now enters history, subject to its fair assessment,” Bolojan concluded, offering condolences to Iliescu’s family, friends, and close ones.
The former president’s passing is expected to stir both reflection and debate, as Romanians continue to assess his role in shaping the country’s democratic path and identity in the wake of communism.
