PASCO, Wash. – New details have emerged about the brawl at a high school basketball game between Hanford and Pasco, thanks to a recently released police report.
The altercation, which took place in February, started with an unsportsmanlike foul during the game. This led to benches clearing and fans getting involved.
According to Pasco Police Department, the situation escalated with rumors of racism and physical fights. Despite allegations of racial slurs, Pasco police found no evidence to support these claims.
The report stated, “In all interviews, no one mentioned racial slurs being made.”
One of the more serious incidents involved a fan accused of making racist remarks. This fan got into a fight with Pasco High School fans and parents. The 20-year-old was reportedly restrained while another person delivered a knockout punch.
Pasco PD recommended third-degree assault charges for three individuals involved, but no charges have been filed.
There were also allegations of a Hanford High School assistant coach choking a player. The police report clarified this as false, stating the coach was attempting to separate players to de-escalate the situation.
Richland School District confirmed to NonStop Local that the Hanford basketball coach remains on administrative leave as they conduct an internal investigation. They stated that placing staff on leave during such investigations is standard practice for ensuring safety and impartiality.
The Pasco School District has taken steps to prevent future incidents. A spokesperson said, “Event safety protocols have been reviewed and enhanced, resulting in increased supervision and additional security staff at all athletic events.”
