A group of backpackers have started a petition to keep the music at “bush doofs” pumping as the Shire of Broome looks to shut the pop-up parties down following two significant sexual assault cases.
“We work 40-50 hours a week in town. We just want to breathe at the end of the week and party together,” petition organiser Quentin Cole said.
But in a statement, the Shire of Broome said it did not support the pop-up parties because of ongoing safety concerns.
“Given the safety, environmental, and antisocial behaviour risks linked to these gatherings, the shire does not support or facilitate them, and encourages the public to report concerns to WA Police as the lead enforcement agency,” a Shire spokesperson said.
In 2022, a 31-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at one of the parties, with the perpetrator still at large, while in April a 19-year-old man was charged over the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl at another “bush doof”.
