PDP National Convention in Crisis as Key Figures Boycott and Court Battles Erupt

The Peoples Democratic Party PDP’s National Convention in Ibadan faces turmoil as prominent figures withdraw and court rulings create confusion, threatening the party’s unity and its preparations for the 2027 elections. Conflicting court orders and the absence of key stakeholders cast a shadow over the event, raising concerns about the legality of any decisions and the party’s ability to overcome internal divisions.

The Peoples Democratic Party PDP is engulfed in a fresh wave of internal conflict as several prominent figures have withdrawn from the party’s National Convention slated to take place in Ibadan . This highly anticipated gathering, intended to be a pivotal moment for the opposition party in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, is now marred by legal battles, internal opposition, and the conspicuous absence of key individuals.

The absence of these influential figures has amplified the existing strain within the party, just as the PDP had hoped to project an image of unity and strength to the public. This unfolding crisis poses a significant challenge to the party’s ability to present a unified front and effectively compete in future elections. The political landscape is becoming increasingly complex, and the PDP’s internal struggles could have far-reaching implications for the upcoming electoral cycles. The convention was meant to be a show of force and a platform to chart a course for the future, but it has instead become a stage for internal conflict and disagreement. The party’s ability to navigate these turbulent waters will be crucial for its survival and relevance in the years to come. The situation has been further complicated by conflicting court rulings. A Federal High Court in Abuja initially issued an order halting the convention until Sule Lamido was given the opportunity to purchase a nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman. The court also restricted the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC from observing or acknowledging any convention held without Lamido’s participation. However, a separate ruling from an Oyo State High Court subsequently authorized the party to proceed with the convention, even instructing INEC to monitor the proceedings in Ibadan. These contradictory legal directives have sown confusion and uncertainty among party members, raising serious questions about the legitimacy and legality of any decisions made during the convention. The legal wrangling underscores the deep divisions within the PDP and highlights the complex interplay of political maneuvering and legal challenges that the party is currently grappling with. The conflicting rulings have created a legal quagmire, further destabilizing the party and adding to the already tense atmosphere surrounding the convention. The impact of these legal battles could extend far beyond the convention itself, potentially affecting the party’s overall strategy and its ability to effectively organize and mobilize its members. This legal uncertainty contributes to the prevailing atmosphere of unease and apprehension within the party.Despite the prevailing uncertainty, preparations for the convention have continued at the Lekan Salami Stadium, where the venue has been adorned in the PDP’s signature colours. Delegates from various states have arrived by bus and are accommodated in hotels throughout Ibadan, while organizers are making last-minute arrangements to ensure the convention runs smoothly. The atmosphere at the stadium on Thursday night was filled with the sounds of drums, songs, and dancing as party supporters attempted to maintain a positive and optimistic spirit. However, the absence of key stakeholders has cast a shadow over the event. Some party insiders have expressed concerns that any decisions made during the convention could be challenged and potentially overturned in higher courts. The Rivers State chapter of the PDP has already distanced itself from the convention, citing the “leadership crisis at the national level” and “various litigations” that are tearing the party apart. The chapter also pointed to the lack of communication between the national leadership and Governor Fubara, stating that it has left the state chapter “incommunicado.” While delegates from the South-West, South-South, North-West, and North-Central regions have already arrived in Ibadan, the prevailing mood within the party remains one of uncertainty and apprehension. Many believe the convention may exacerbate the internal divisions rather than provide a resolution. The situation reflects the deep-seated problems within the party, the internal conflicts, and the inability of the leadership to resolve critical issues. The future of the party depends on its ability to overcome these challenges and rebuild internal trust and unity
