For now, Barcelona can celebrate putting some breathing room between themselves and rivals Real, who can narrow the gap back to one point if they win at Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday night. Their crosstown rivals Atlético ended an 18-year wait for an away win in the league against Barcelona 12 months ago and they struck first after 18 minutes on this occasion when Baena beat a high defensive line to score. Baena latched on to Nahuel Molina’s through-ball to race through on goal before gently lifting over Joan García and while the offside flag went up, the decision was overturned on VAR. Thiago Almada spurned a gilt-edged opportunity after being put through and cutting on to his right foot although he seemed to be off balance before directing a shot wide after finally getting into position. And Torres made sure there would be no way back for Atlético, slotting in from close range after being left unmarked from Alex Balde’s low cross.
