Train passengers are being warned of ticket check disruption due to a planned strike. Rail union RMT said its members working for Carlisle Support Services on the Northern trains’ revenue and gateline contract had voted in favour of a 48-hour strike.
The union said the action follows claims of “bullying and harassment by managers, including pressuring staff to break the strike, denying extra hours to union members, and forcing redeployments at short notice to remote locations.” The ECHO has approached Carlisle Support Services for comment.
Members plan to strike on Tuesday, October 7 and Wednesday, October 8. RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: “Carlisle bosses are trying to bully staff into submission instead of negotiating a fair deal. Our members will not be intimidated by any employer.
“All our people want is respect, fair pay and decent conditions. The company need to get back to the table and make a decent offer. This whole episode underlines the need for all outsourcing on the railway to end and for all rail workers to be brought back in house into direct employment.”
Northern Rail did not comment on the planned strike. Get all the big headlines, pictures, analysis, opinion and video on the stories that matter to you by signing up to our daily and breaking newsletter. Sign up to our breaking news newsletter here.
