Dietary guidelines for Americans provide evidence-based recommendations that are meant to help people make smarter choices about what they eat and drink at every stage of life.
But as science advances and we learn more, the guidelines tend to change and evolve.
Dr. Kristina Carman, who is the senior fellow of nutrition and holistic health with the Independent Medical Alliance, said while there are many things that need to be addressed, one of the biggest should be moving away from counting food groups to focusing more on food quality.
“When we’re looking at children in particular, we’re really looking at a lot of ultra-processed foods that are then marketed as healthy. It’s showing up in lots of complicated issues and health issues,” Carman said Thursday during a one-on-one interview with Angela Brown of The National News Desk.
Ultimately, our bodies like real food and it’s not about perfection; it’s about knowing how to choose — and choosing the right things and the right amounts,” she added.
