New 19-hour Met Office weather warnings issued as Brits brace for 75mph winds – Daily Star

Swathes of the UK will be hammered by fierce winds tomorrow (November 27) as a 19-hour weather warning takes hold. The Met Office has issued a yellow wind alert covering the Highlands and Eilean Siar, Orkney and Shetland and Strathclyde for Thursday and Friday. Powerful winds are set to tear through these regions, beginning around 4pm on Thursday and battering areas until 11am on Friday.

The warning was issued on Wednesday, with a Met Office forecast stating: “Very strong southwesterly winds will develop during Thursday evening, continuing overnight before easing from the west through Friday morning. Gusts of 60-70 mph are likely, with a few places perhaps seeing gusts in excess of 75 mph at times.”

Residents in affected Scottish areas are being cautioned about disruption to road, air and ferry transport. Coastal areas are anticipated to be pounded by massive waves. It comes after we reported how Brits have been warned plans to visit Christmas markets in the first week of December might be called out due to heavy snowfalls

Bus services will also face disruption, with journeys extended due to delays on exposed routes and bridges. Brief power outages and service interruptions are also on the cards, reports the Mirror.

The Met Office has encouraged people to verify road conditions before setting off and to alter their plans if needed. It also recommended people prepare for potential blackouts by gathering torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other vital supplies.

Those living near the coast have been advised to stay away from cliff edges and keep dogs on leads.

* Highlands and Eilean Siar – Eilean Siar, Highland

* Orkney and Shetland – Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands

* Strathclyde – Argyll and Bute

The Met Office has three categories of weather warning, depending on the likely impact of severe weather and also how likely it is to strike in a particular area.

A yellow warning is issued when weather conditions are expected to disrupt travel and traffic and may impact on daily routines but are not likely to pose a risk to life or property.

The Yellow weather alert for wind will remain in effect until 11am on Friday.
