Nasarawa targets N5bn monthly IGR

The Nasarawa State Government has set a target to raise its Internally Generated Revenue to N5bn per month in 2026, as part of the state’s “Budget of Strategic Consolidation.”

The announcement was made on Monday by the state Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Munira Abdullahi, during a ministerial briefing in Lafia organised by the Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Dr Ibrahim Tanko, aimed at showcasing the achievements of government officials.

Represented by the Director of Budget in the ministry, Peter Akolo, Abdullahi said the N545.2 billion budget prioritises infrastructure development, job creation, and social services to improve citizens’ quality of life.

She explained that the government had begun expanding its revenue base to reduce reliance on Federal allocations, ensuring the effective implementation of the budget.

Abdullahi highlighted measures targeting royalties and haulage revenues from solid mineral deposits in the state as a boost to IGR:

“We have a data-based approach and have begun a process to group all illegal miners in the state into cooperative societies, register them, and ensure that they pay the desired tax as part of our efforts to boost the IGR. The ministry will rigorously monitor and track the implementation of all projects, programmes and policies outlined in the budget. We have generated over N52 billion as IGR in 2025 as a state, and we intend to exceed that in 2026 with a target of N5 billion every month, targeting N60 billion in the year.”

On the new tax regime, the commissioner said the state government had put machinery in motion to domesticate it and ensure full implementation.

Speaking on his part, Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Dr Ibrahim Tanko, said the ministry had created avenues such as the ministerial briefing to educate and inform the public about government policies, programmes, and projects.

“Our ministry is working in collaboration with the State Revenue Service to ensure that all hotels in the state begin the payment of the necessary tax to the government. We urge residents to endeavour to pay their taxes to enable the government deliver more projects and other programmes that would benefit all residents of the state,” he added.
