Syngenta Group is urging the Indian government to implement policies that encourage sustainable farming, particularly for smallholder farmers facing adversities due to climate change. Petra Laux, the Chief Sustainability Officer, stated that current mechanisms are inadequate in rewarding eco-friendly practices.
Laux pointed out the disparity where agriculture contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions but receives minimal climate transition funding. Policy revisions are necessary to offer substantial financial support to farmers adopting sustainable practices.
Syngenta’s global initiatives, such as their methane-focused projects, are aimed at marketable emission reductions. Despite these efforts, consumers’ reluctance to pay more for sustainable produce remains a barrier globally. Laux suggests adopting European models of subsidies as potential solutions.
