THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is set to upgrade its traffic monitoring system with AI-powered video technology to facilitate its shift to adaptive signaling, MMDA Chairman Don Artes said.
“As we phase in the adaptive signaling system, this innovation represents a major step toward ensuring smooth traffic flow, minimizing road crashes, and optimizing efficiency,” Artes said in a press briefing in Pasig City on Thursday.
Artes added the move aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to embrace advanced technologies to enhance public service.
The MMDA is targeting full implementation of the AI-enabled video detectors by next year.
According to the MMDA’s Traffic Engineering Center (TEC), video-based traffic detection systems are more resilient than traditional ground loop sensors. They are less prone to damage from roadworks, adverse weather conditions, and physical interference.

Equipped with artificial intelligence, the system can also collect additional data, such as vehicle speed, direction, and license plate numbers — information that can be vital in traffic analysis and enforcement.
Artes presented video footage to the media showing issues caused by countdown timers at intersections, such as drivers speeding up to beat red lights and making last-second decisions that often lead to traffic violations or accidents.

Last week, the MMDA-TEC completed the removal of traffic signal countdown timers in 96 intersections along major Metro Manila thoroughfares.
These were replaced with adaptive signal systems that adjust in real time based on road conditions and vehicle flow, unlike the old fixed-timer traffic lights.
Artes said the agency will continue to explore ways to incorporate smart technologies into traffic management to address the growing number of vehicles on Metro Manila roads.
