Joshua Zirkzee is keen to end his Manchester United spell ‘as soon as possible’ amid interest from several Premier League and European clubs, according to reports.
The Dutch forward was handed a rare start in United’s 1-1 draw with Wolves on Tuesday, but saw his game ended after the first 45 minutes, with Ruben Amorim taking Zirkzee off for academy prospect Jack Fletcher at half-time.
The decision has reportedly only added to Zirkzee’s angst amid a difficult season at Old Trafford, as he was taken off right after scoring his first goal of the season for the Red Devils.
Roma Leading Race for Zirkzee
According to iNews, Roma are seen as frontrunners to sign Zirkzee during the January transfer window, having already made contact with the Dutchman’s representatives.
The Serie A side are reportedly expected to make a loan offer with an obligation to make the move permanent after the season, with Zirkzee keen on returning to Italy following an 18-month spell with United.
The 24-year-old is also believed to be a loan target for Premier League clubs Everton and West Ham, but Roma are claimed to have the edge in the race as Zirkzee has his heart set on playing Serie A football again.
The Dutchman joined United in the summer of 2024 following an impressive season with Bologna, where he scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 34 league appearances.
Zirkzee has found the back of the net only eight times since his move to Old Trafford, scoring just four Premier League goals in 42 appearances.
Man United Eyeing a Replacement?
Manchester United could look to replace Zirkzee with another striker, having been named as long-term admirers of Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta.
According to reports, while the Red Devils are not actively looking to sign a new striker in this transfer window, Mateta may be someone they could seriously consider if he becomes available.
The France international has eight goals in 17 league appearances this season, scoring his latest in the 2-1 defeat to United in November.

Mateta’s contract at Selhurst Park runs until the summer of 2027.
Midfield Trio Wanted by Clubs
Although significant arrivals are not expected in January, United’s ongoing search for a new midfielder could be sped up by the departure of one of their current stars.
According to reports, the trio of Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro have no shortage of suitors in January, with MLS sides eyeing Casemiro ahead of his contract expiry in June.
