Lily Collins will play Audrey Hepburn in a new film about the making of the 1961 classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
The 36-year-old actress will also also serve as a producer on the project, which is based on Sam Watson’s book Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman.
The screenplay will be written by Alena Smith, known for creating the series Dickinson for Apple TV. No director has been announced yet, according to Variety.
The original film Breakfast at Tiffany’s is an adaptation of Truman Capote’s novella and tells the story of socialite Holly Golightly, who meets a poor writer who has moved into her building.
The upcoming film is described as “the first complete account of the film’s creation” and will follow the turbulent development and filming of the production.
According to press releases, the story will cover the chaotic pre-production period of the film, including the casting controversy. Truman Capote wanted Marilyn Monroe to play Holly Golightly and felt that Paramount Studios had “double crossed” him by choosing Hepburn.
The film will also show the drama on set, including an incident in which a crew member was nearly electrocuted while filming the opening scene in front of Tiffany’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue.
Capote, costume designer Edith Head, and director Blake Edwards will appear as characters in the film, whose title is still unknown, although the cast has not yet been announced.
Announcing the project on Instagram, Lily said: “It’s with almost 10 years of development and a lifetime of admiration and adoration for Audrey that I’m finally able share this. Honored and ecstatic don’t begin to express how I feel… .”
The film is backed by Imagine Entertainment. Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, and Justin Wilkes are producing on behalf of the company. Mark Gilbar will serve as executive producer, and Joyce Choi will oversee development of the project.
Charlie McDowell and Alex Orlovsky will produce for Case Study Films alongside Scott LaStati. Sam Watson and Brandon Milan will serve as executive producers for Felix Farmer Productions. Michael Schenberg will also serve as executive producer. | BGNES
