INESC TEC joined the international workshop Identifying potential core areas of HPC cooperation between the EU and Brazil, held at the Laboratório Nacional de Computação Científica (LNCC) in Petrópolis, Brazil. The event was organised by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Delegation of the European Union to Brazil, and brought together researchers, policy-makers, scientific decision-makers and industry representatives to identify strategic areas for cooperation between the European Union and Brazil in the fields of high-performance computing (HPC) and quantum technologies.
INESC TEC stood out in the thematic session “Quantum-HPC hybrid applications”, one of the most advanced areas on the current international scientific agenda. The session was moderated by Bernd Mohr, from the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, and included several leading Brazilian institutions, consolidating INESC TEC’s position as one of the main European players in this field.
“This participation reflects the strong collaboration between INESC TEC and LNCC in supercomputing, which has now been extended to quantum technologies. These synergies pave the way for new joint projects and solidify the Institute’s role in international cooperation on emerging technologies,” said André Sequeira, an INESC TEC researcher in quantum computing and the Institute’s representative at the event.
During this session, held in late November, participants discussed areas of shared interest, namely quantum-HPC hybrid applications and quantum simulation, as well as cooperation mechanisms for joint projects between the European Union and Brazil. These included the development of benchmarks, workflows, and mobility initiatives for researchers and students.
By participating in this event, INESC TEC reinforced the connections with the Brazilian academia and industrial community, identified potential strategic partners, and further established itself as a European reference in the fields of quantum computing and high-performance computing.
