New Leeds United summer signing Sean Longstaff has been hailed as one of the bargains of the summer following his first start for the club. Injuries to club captain Ethan Ampadu and Japan international Ao Tanaka provided an opening for a first start of the Premier League campaign for Longstaff, with fate having it would come against his former club Newcastle United.
Longstaff put in a midfield masterclass against his hometown club, helping Leeds to a point as their impressive start to the season at home continued after previously beating Everton. Four points from three games, two of those against Champions League clubs, represents a good start for Daniel Farke’s men.
Heading into transfer deadline day still hoping to add more players to aid the attack, former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy believes the Whites have already made arguably their best signing, certainly in terms of value for money.
“Longstaff is going to be one of the bargains of the summer. I think it was around £12m, rising to £15m”, said Murphy while reviewing Leeds’ game for Match of the Day.

“He was terrific for a couple of seasons at Newcastle and deserves all the plaudits. I thought he was outstanding.”
Having bided his time in the opening weeks for his chance, Longstaff has certainly taken it and dampened the concern around Leeds’ midfield options with Ampadu out. The Whites will now hope to add a bit more spark up top with the rest of the team showing in the two home games at least, that they can keep opponents at bay.
