By training specialists, researchers, and innovators within the region, the institute hopes to strengthen Africa’s capacity to create and scale decentralized solutions tailored to the continent’s specific needs and opportunities.

The University of Namibia (UNAM) in collaboration with the Africa Blockchain Institute (ABI) has announced the approval and launch of a pioneering Master of Science in Blockchain Technology program – an important step forward for blockchain education and innovation on the continent.

The newly endorsed postgraduate degree positions Namibia, and Africa as a whole, as an emerging center for blockchain research, talent development, and industry-driven innovation. Built to blend academic depth with hands-on experience, the curriculum will cover blockchain architecture, decentralized systems, smart contract development, governance, cybersecurity, and the broader socio-economic impact of emerging technologies.

ABI notes that the program is designed to close the long-standing knowledge gap that has limited Africa’s participation in the global blockchain economy. By training specialists, researchers, and innovators within the region, the institute hopes to strengthen Africa’s capacity to create and scale decentralized solutions tailored to the continent’s specific needs and opportunities.

“This program represents more than a graduate degree. It reflects a strategic investment in Africa’s digital future,” said Kayode Babarinde, Executive Director of ABI.

“Our partnership with the University of Namibia demonstrates our commitment to developing home-grown expertise capable of leading Africa’s role in the global blockchain revolution.”

UNAM shared this perspective, stating that the initiative aligns with its mission to advance technology adoption, promote research excellence, and contribute to economic transformation through education.

As blockchain technology gains ground in finance, public governance, agriculture, energy, and supply chain management, experts believe that a dedicated master’s program could accelerate adoption and innovation across the region. By equipping graduates with both technical capabilities and policy insight, the program aims to prepare professionals who can navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving digital world.

Applications for the Master of Science in Blockchain Technology are now open. Interested students can apply through the University of Namibia’s online portal.

The inaugural cohort is expected to set a new benchmark for advanced blockchain studies in Africa, shaping the continent’s next generation of innovators, researchers, and technology leaders.
