The Las Vegas Raiders appear to have focused their head coaching search on Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb and Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. Kubiak seems to have taken the lead, though the Raiders can’t officially hire him until after the Super Bowl.
At this stage, only a verbal or handshake agreement is possible; no contract can be signed yet. Webb had been considered a backup option in case Kubiak pursued another opportunity or changed his mind, but that window has closed.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Jan. 29 that Webb has withdrawn from the Raiders’ search and is expected to take an offensive coordinator position elsewhere. The move could signal that he recognized Kubiak was the favorite for the job.
However, the Raiders might have a Plan B if the Kubiak hire doesn’t work out. After the Schefter report, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero remains in the head coaching search picture.
“Eyes on Klint Kubiak for the Raiders job, but Panthers DC Ejiro Evero is still in the mix there,” Fowler wrote on X on Jan. 29. “Some candidates have been eliminated but he has not. He conveyed detailed QB/offensive plan in in-person meeting with Raiders. Raiders regime and Evero have Denver ties.”
ESPN’s Peter Schrager reported on Jan. 28 that the Raiders and Arizona Cardinals have the chance to meet with Kubiak again before the Super Bowl, and the expectation is that both teams will take it this weekend.
With the Silver and Black potentially meeting with Kubiak again for a second interview, former Raiders standout Kirk Morrison shared his take on the Seahawks coach, who could be the next head coach in Las Vegas.
“I think he checks a lot of the boxes,” Morrison said on the Jan. 28 edition of “Upon Further Review.” “You saw his offense not only just on the NFC conference championship game, but also throughout the whole entire season.
“I think even bigger is that you saw the offense uh with Sam Darnold who’s been a quarterback that’s bounced around the league and you know had success last year in Minnesota and really found a home you know in Seattle.”
Moreover, Morrison revealed that the way Kubiak has been able to turn this Seahawks offense into a well-oiled machine, especially in the playoffs, have teams like the Raiders salivating at what he could do for them.
“I think what also intrigues me about Klint Kubiak is that it seems that he’s the kind of coach that has a system and a scheme that gets guys open, that gets guys to be at their best, and understanding that whatever the defense presents, you can have options,” Morrison added. “You can have things at your disposal.
“We’re going off one of the best job interviews in terms of what’s happened in these games so far in the playoffs, and his offense has done pretty darn good, led them to a Super Bowl. So now you’re kind of envisioning what that would look like for your football team if you’re the Raiders. And that’s kind of where the excitement has kind of come from.”
