The Ikoyi Club Ladies’ Golf section, over the weekend in Ikoyi, Lagos marked its forthcoming 50th anniversary tournament with the unveiling of its official logo.
Themed “Go Beyond – Golf and Golfing,” the anniversary event — scheduled for November 12-15, 2025 — seeks to highlight the influence of golf beyond the course.
The theme underscores the sport’s wider impact on life, from environmental preservation and biodiversity promotion to nurturing a positive mindset rooted in health, self-regulation, and discipline.
Speaking at the unveiling, Mrs. Iyabo Attah, a pioneer member and Past Ladies’ Captain, reflected on her journey in the sport and the transformation of the club and tournament over the past five decades. She encouraged more women to embrace golf, adding: “It is my desire therefore, to see that more women have taken up the game of Golf and also get their children / ward to also learn the sport.”
Echoing her remarks, the 2025 Ladies’ Captain, Mrs. Peggy Onwu, described the unveiling as a defining moment. She noted: “This unveiling of the Open tournament logo is a milestone, given that it is 50 years of commitment, skills development and building connections with ladies across Africa and beyond.”
Members of the 50th Anniversary Open Tournament Organising Committee, Rerhe Idonije and Yemi Afariogun, further emphasized the importance of involving secondary school students in the milestone. They explained: “The students’ creativity and commitment not only enriched the process but also transformed the 50th anniversary logo unveiling into a defining moment; a Golden Swing powered by Grit and Grace.”
In his remarks, Mr. Frank Aigbogun, Publisher of Business Day Newspapers and chair of the logo design review, congratulated the Ladies’ Section of Ikoyi Club 1938 on reaching its golden jubilee.
He highlighted the transformative role of women in golf, adding: “You know, I’ve been around golf long enough, the landscape has changed dramatically, and much of that change started right here with pioneers like Mrs Iyabo Attah who refused to accept that golf was just a man’s game. The ladies who took part in this tournament 50 years ago – they weren’t just playing golf. They were making a statement. They were building something that would outlast them. And look around today – their vision has become reality.”
Also speaking, Mr. Femi Osinubi, Consulting and Risk Services Leader at Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC), reaffirmed the firm’s commitment as a partner of the tournament.
He said the initiative aligns with PwC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) objectives, which include promoting gender equality and supporting environmentally friendly causes. He added that PwC remains committed to expanding its role in women-focused initiatives across various sectors.
A key highlight of the event was the logo design review ceremony, which recognized the participation of over 18 secondary schools in Lagos. After presenting their designs, three schools emerged winners: Command Secondary School (3rd place, N50,000), Green Spring Secondary School (2nd place, N70,000), and Wahab Folawiyo Senior High School (1st place, N100,000 plus a brand-new computer).
