2nd March 2026 – (Hong Kong) A 50-year-old unemployed man, Wong Koon‑ming, has been jailed for four years after a High Court jury found him guilty of manslaughter over a fatal dispute about an HK$800 bicycle. He had earlier been acquitted of murder by a seven‑member jury following a week‑long trial.
The court was told that Wong and construction worker Lo Chun‑shing, 58, clashed outside Yan Ying House at Tin Yan Estate, Tin Shui Wai, on 29 October 2022. The confrontation escalated into a fight in which both men used iron pipes. Lo was struck on the head, collapsed, and never regained consciousness; he died in hospital two days later.
According to police interviews cited in court, Wong said he had agreed to sell his bicycle to Lo for HK$800, but Lo later refused to pay, alleging the bike was stolen. Wong repeatedly sought payment in the days before the altercation. In mitigation, the defence said Wong, who shares two daughters with his ex‑wife, survived on odd jobs and a monthly allowance under the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance scheme. The judge imposed a four‑year custodial sentence for manslaughter.
