After a closure lasting more than a month due to the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine will officially reopen to visitors on Saturday, Nov. 15.

The National Park Service announced the reopening Friday, noting that while the site was accessible to the public on Nov. 14, no interpretive programming was available until full operations resume this weekend.

According to the park’s update posted on Nov. 14, Fort McHenry reopened its grounds but suspended ranger-led tours and educational activities for the day. Beginning Saturday, Nov. 15, all regular programming, visitor services and scheduled activities will return.

The Visitor Center and gift shop will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., with the park grounds accessible from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Park rangers and volunteers will be available to answer questions, provide maps and brochures, and assist visitors eager to learn about the site’s pivotal role in American history.

All visitors must have an entrance pass to enter the historic Star Fort. Pass options include:

The park operates as a cashless site, so all transactions must be made by card or mobile payment.

Visitors can once again tour the historic Star Fort, where American troops famously defended Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Roughly 80% of the fort’s brickwork remains original, offering an authentic glimpse into early 19th-century military life.

The Star Fort will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., with restrooms and exhibits available inside.

Outdoor recreation opportunities also await visitors. The park’s open lawns and Seawall Trail provide scenic spaces for walking, biking and enjoying views of Baltimore Harbor.

Park officials remind visitors that all programs are subject to change depending on staff availability and weather conditions. Guests are encouraged to confirm activities with the front desk upon arrival.
