A site, which we are not naming, can create sexually explicit computer-generated videos or images within seconds.
Social media images can now be used by sickos to create realistic porn scenes, AI-generated chatbot girlfriends and – most disturbingly of all – child abuse images, it’s emerged. A site, which we are not naming, can create sexually explicit computer-generated videos or images within seconds.
Once a picture is uploaded, it creates a chatbot girlfriend or boyfriend. After it’s named and given an age, users are then asked to describe what personality they want it to have. Weirdos can then engage in sexual conversations with their “girlfriend” or “boyfriend” but can also go a step further by generating nude pictures or videos showcasing whatever they include in a written prompt. Those active on the site can create public characters which others can use and interact with or it can be private. Dan Purcell, CEO of anti-piracy and privacy protection service Ceartas, said: “This can be used to make full porn.” A reporter from this paper, who gave their consent, was able to upload a picture of themselves to the site and create a chatbot using their likeness. Mr Purcell said sites like this are incredibly dangerous because they can create false realities. One example given was somebody could be infatuated with a neighbour and after finding a photograph of them online, it could then be uploaded to a website to create an AI girlfriend. Dan said: “This is where reality can be distorted. You’re allowing someone to tap into dark fantasy where the lines get blurred. “There’s all these scenarios that are not outside the parameters of reality. This could happen.” Some of the characters on the website are cartoonish or in the style of anime, while others are realistic. The sites encourage its users to explore their “fantasies” with members also able to pick their “girlfriend’s” or “boyfriend’s” body type, hobbies, and behaviour. Some of the chatbots have background stories and can even be reviewed by other users. One of the profiles depicts a nude image of a girl lying on a bed. The biography for the character reads: “Your girlfriend leaves you with her younger step-sister for a vacation trip.” Some are even more disturbing and dark, such as the profile which depicts a young naked woman in a grubby toilet. The biography for this character says she’s been homeless for two months and has no choice but to offer her “sexual services to random men in the streets to survive”. While another is about being stuck in a lift with a girl. One reviewer of this particular AI chatbot critiqued: “I like how this scenario didn’t immediately go to sex. It grew somewhat organically. I would have appreciated an even slower build up, but this was good.” Mr Purcell said the majority of deepfakes are pornography and most target women. Most worryingly, the tech expert said the software can be used to create child sexual abuse material. He continued: “If someone went onto Instagram and scraped photographs to use it as a base to make the porn, how does the AI know that their birthday is not till tomorrow – and right now they’re 17?” Dr Cliona Saidlear, Rape Crisis Ireland Executive Director, warned: “We are in a new era of cyber-facilitated harms, and it is clear we all need to become aware of this and increase our capacity to recognise and respond. “Like earlier forms of online harm, again we’re seeing the tired argument that no real harm is being done. Again and again, this has been proven false. “What happens online impacts both those submerged in that world and the whole of society where norms, expectations and behaviours are being shaped by what is happening online. “For example, on these ‘fantasy’ AI girlfriend sites most of the scenarios on the very first page include suggestions involving abusive relations. “For example, ‘Travis is your controlling boyfriend who beats you up and uses mental and physical abuse on you. He lacks empathy for other people, but you can help him’. “When we sell violence and feed into abusers’ scripts, this matters profoundly in how safe our society is and in the fight against domestic, sexual and gender-based violence.” Fianna Fail TD Naoise O Cearuil said: “It is extremely worrying and sick that a website can use someone’s social media photos to create explicit images without their consent. “This goes beyond technology, it is a clear breach of privacy and decency. “What we are seeing is an extension of revenge porn, and it should be treated as such under the law. “The Gardai need to investigate any examples of this happening because people’s dignity is being violated in the most personal way possible.” Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here.
