Electric Truck Market by Propulsion (BEV, PHEV, FCEV), Type (Light-duty Trucks, Medium-duty Trucks, Heavy-duty Trucks), Range, Battery Type, Battery Capacity, Level of Automation, End User, Payload Capacity, and Region – Global Forecast to 2032

The electric truck industry is expected to grow from USD 5,247.2 million in 2025 to USD 32,133.4 million by 2032, registering a CAGR of 29.5%. This market is primarily driven by a shift toward sustainable transportation and stringent emission regulations.

Governments and regulatory bodies worldwide are actively implementing policies that promote the adoption of zero-emission vehicles to combat air pollution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This regulatory pressure encourages OEMs to accelerate the development of electric alternatives to traditional diesel-powered trucks.

Additionally, rising fuel costs and the need for lower total cost of ownership are prompting fleet operators to consider electric trucks as a viable long-term investment. Technological advancements in battery capacity, charging infrastructure, and electric drivetrains are further enhancing vehicle efficiency, range, and reliability.

These developments, combined with growing consumer awareness and corporate sustainability goals, are shaping a favorable environment for the widespread adoption of electric trucks across various commercial and industrial applications.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have emerged as the dominant segment in the electric truck market due to their complete reliance on electric power, offering zero tailpipe emissions and superior energy efficiency. These vehicles use a permanent magnet motor powered by a high-capacity battery, ensuring 100% electrification without hybrid assistance.

Initially introduced in lower-capacity formats, BEVs have evolved significantly, with advancements in battery technology and vehicle architecture making them viable for medium and heavy-duty applications.

Electric motors in BEVs typically operate at around 90% efficiency, outperforming plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

With growing environmental mandates and fuel-saving priorities, fleets are increasingly transitioning to battery electric-powered trucks to meet sustainability goals.

Prominent truck manufacturers such as Mercedes Benz Group AG, BYD, and Nikola Corporation have invested heavily in the development of BEV variants, reinforcing the dominance of this segment. In China, leading electric truck producers have launched BEVs with ranges exceeding 200 miles, expanding their application from intra-city logistics to intercity transport.

The global push for zero-emission freight solutions, combined with regulatory frameworks such as ZEV mandates and carbon reduction targets, is compelling OEMs to prioritize BEVs in their product strategies. As fleet operators continue to recognize BEVs’ operational cost benefits and environmental compliance advantages, this segment is expected to maintain its leadership in the electric truck market during the forecast period.

“North America is expected to record the highest CAGR during the forecast period.”

North America, particularly the US and Canada, has emerged as the fastest-growing market for electric trucks, driven by policy mandates, federal funding, and state-level incentives. Both countries are pursuing ambitious emission reduction goals shaping commercial vehicle electrification.

Multiple US states have signed the Multi-State Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicle MOU, which targets 100% ZEV sales by 2050, with 30% interim adoption by 2030. Similarly, Canada’s 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan mandates that all new medium- and heavy-duty vehicle (MHDV) sales be zero-emission by 2040.

These policy frameworks are accelerating OEM investments and fleet conversions across the region.

Major North American truck manufacturers and international OEMs are expanding their electric truck portfolios to align with regional goals. Companies like Rivian have enhanced electric trucks with extended range and fleet-focused features.

In June 2024, the company enhanced its older version of R1T with performance, technology, and design upgrades. The R1T is offered with a lithium iron phosphate-based standard pack, which gives a travel range of 210 miles, and larger packs that can provide up to 415 miles.

Simultaneously, substantial public and private investments are being directed toward building high-capacity charging infrastructure along logistics corridors.

The North American electric truck market is also witnessing rising interest from retail, e-commerce, and logistics companies aiming to meet sustainability targets. Amazon, Walmart, and FedEx are piloting and scaling electric truck fleets to reduce their transportation-related emissions.

For instance, in January 2025, Amazon placed its largest-ever order of over 200 fully electric eActros 600 heavy goods vehicles from Daimler to operate in Germany and the UK, supporting its aim to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. These companies are prioritizing medium and heavy-duty trucks for last-mile and regional distribution due to their operational cost savings, regulatory compliance benefits, and improved public image.

As the ecosystem of technology, policy, and infrastructure aligns, the demand for electric trucks is expected to rise in this region.
