An ‘innovative’ new EV charging project is being trialled across Coventry. It is designed for people who park on the road and eliminates the need for designated bays.
Coventry City Council has partnered with Trojan Energy to pilot Trojan Home, a new electric vehicle charging solution designed for residents who park on the road. It offers affordable and convenient charging for people without driveways.
Chargers are installed in the pavement and connected to residents’ electricity supply via a small control box on their property, according to Coventry City Council. Homeowners can have them installed free of charge with a monthly subscription that covers a charging adapter and equipment upgrades.

Unlike traditional public charge points, there is no need for visible street furniture or designated bays. Drivers plug in a compact, handheld adaptor, eliminating the need for apps and QR codes, creating a ‘seamless experience’ similar to home driveway charging.
Over the next 12 months, 20 Coventry households can try Trojan Home units to charge their EVs. But the charge points will also be available to other residents on a pay-as-you-go basis, with households fully reimbursed for third-party usage.
Trojan Energy and Coventry City Council will be evaluating performance, usage, and community impact, and if successful, a broader rollout will be considered. Residents interested in joining the project should visit Trojan Energy.
Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration, and Climate Change at Coventry City Council, said: “Coventry is proud to be at the forefront of transport innovation and sustainable transport, and this pilot with Trojan Energy is another example of how we are using proven technology to make electric vehicle charging more accessible, affordable, and inclusive for residents.”
Cllr O’Boyle added: “It supports more people to make the switch to cleaner transport options, reduces emissions, and works towards our climate change goals. I encourage those who are interested to sign up and express interest, as applications will be delivered on a first-come, first-served basis.”
Ian Mackenzie, CEO of Trojan Energy, said: “Trojan Home offers the freedom and fairness that many EV drivers are missing. Being able to charge at home rates, right outside their front door, with no compromise to the street or community. We are delighted to partner with Coventry City Council on bringing this solution to more people.”
