Donald Trump has been “discussing a range of options” to acquire Greenland – and has refused to rule out military action to snatch the Danish isle by force.
The Orange Manbaby, 79, made clear that acquiring Greenland was a “national security priority”, the White House said.
In a jaw-dropping statement, a spokesman said: “The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the US military is always an option at the Commander-in-Chief’s disposal.”
It comes after Trump said at the weekend that the US “needed” Greenland for security reasons. The island, with a population of around 56,831, is a semi-autonomous region of fellow Nato member Denmark.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned on Monday that an attack by the US would spell the end of Nato.
And European leaders on Tuesday rallied round the Danes in a rare rebuke to the White House, saying Greenland “belongs to its people”.
In a joint statement with theprime ministers of Denmark, Italy, Poland and Spain, Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz said: “It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.”
Sir Keir Starmer later repeated British support for Denmark at a press conference in Paris where Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff were present. The PM said: “I’ve been very clear as to what my position, the position of the UK government is.”
But Trump is emboldened after the US seized Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro over the weekend and hauled him before a New York court after a military blitz on Caracas.
And a top Washington source said on Tuesday the US could buy Greenland in order to own it, or create a compact of “free association” with the island, the Sun reports.
