SIBU (Feb 10): The Sarawak government views the media as a key partner in promoting inclusive development, transparency and global outreach as the state advances its long-term development agenda, said Datuk Michael Tiang.
The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government said Sarawak is the first in the country to have a comprehensive master plan and development strategy extending to 2030, making accurate and accessible reporting more important than ever.
“As we move forward, the more important the role of the media becomes. We need the press and we depend on the media.
“That’s why the Sarawak government, without any hesitation established Sarawak Public Communication Unit and TV Sarawak,” he said when officiating at the media night organised by Pelawan Service Centre on Monday in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.
Tiang said the media plays a crucial role in translating government policies, such as carbon storage initiatives, sustainable green energy, and the hydrogen economy into simple language that can be understood by all Sarawakians, including those in rural areas.
“We need you to write in simple words that even orang kampung (villagers) can understand. Government policies are for everyone. We never want anyone to be left behind,” he said.
He noted that through newspapers, online platforms, videos and social media, the media helps disseminate accurate information on Sarawak’s progress, achievements and future direction, ensuring the public remains informed and united.
“When everyone knows what is going on, we are on the same page. When we are on the same page, we move forward together in the same direction,” he added.
Tiang also stressed the importance of the media in holding the government accountable, describing it as essential to good governance.
“We need your eyes, your cameras and your writing to keep the government accountable and transparent.
“Reporting both the good and the bad helps us improve and grow stronger,” he said, adding that a free press is healthy and beneficial to public institutions.
On Sarawak’s growing international profile, Tiang said the state is positioning itself as a preferred destination for foreign investment, particularly in sustainable energy, industrial development and the digital economy.
He said agencies such as Invest Sarawak have been established to facilitate international cooperation, with the media serving as Sarawak’s key promoter to the outside world.
“How do people get to know Sarawak? Through your reporting, through your news. You help the world understand who we are and what Sarawak has to offer. So now you see how important you are,” he said.
Also present was Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting.
