Selinsgrove, PA – November 10, 2025 – Army Nurse Corps veteran Steven Wayne Davis announces the release of his book, Keeping The Stethoscope, Hanging Up The Uniform: The Curse of Combat Disability Retirement, published November 10, 2024. Drawing on more than two decades of experience in military and civilian emergency medicine, Davis presents a deeply personal examination of how existing legislation impacts the financial stability and well-being of some combat-disabled veterans.
Through firsthand observations and documented historical context, the book discusses how certain federal provisions enacted in 2004 affect the way retirement pay and disability compensation are calculated for eligible veterans. Davis connects these policies to broader conversations surrounding veteran financial stress, homelessness, and mental health outcomes.
“I refuse to accept that a combat-disabled veteran should have to struggle to meet basic daily needs after years of service,” says Davis. “This book reflects my personal experiences and observations from both the battlefield and the emergency room.”
Keeping The Stethoscope, Hanging Up The Uniform blends memoir and investigative narrative, drawing on Davis’s experiences treating trauma patients and working alongside veterans navigating life after service. Steven Wayne Davis is a former Army Nurse Corps officer who served in combat zones before transitioning to civilian emergency medicine. Over the course of his career, he has worked extensively with veterans and trauma patients, witnessing firsthand the long-term effects of service-related injuries and the challenges of reintegration into civilian life. He continues to work in emergency departments while engaging in public dialogue around veteran experiences and advocacy.
